West Ealing Bowls Club’s good start to the season continued, as they opened they account in National Competitions. In the Bowls England Two Fours, both the A and B sides made progress in tricky away ties. The A side overcame Harefield 47-38, with the quartet of Jay Head, Rob Green, Barry Wheeler and John Carey taking honours with a 20-14 win, whilst the B side pipped Ealing Conservatives 45-44, thanks to a 30-13 victory for the rink of Ejaz Faruqi, Robin Reynolds, Lionel Singleton and Robin Innes.
There was also success in the opening Middlesex League fixture, as West Ealing easily overcame visitors Hayes 72-45, winning all three rinks to earn the full 10 points. The rink of Dick Cunningham, Roy Bond, Kevin Simms and John Carey were the star performers, running out 29-12 victors, having done all the hard work before the break with 23 unanswered shots in the first 10 ends.
There was defeat for West Ealing’s women’s side in the tough opener in the Middlesex Two Fours against Cambridge Park. A victory for the away rink of Kerry Payne, Glynis Hillier, Pam Hughes and Rene Barber 22-12 was enough to level the tie 35-35 and take it to an extra end, but it was their opponents from who held firm to snatch victory.
West Ealing’s mixed side suffered defeats in two recent away matches. At Seale & Sands (Surrey) a narrow 1-shot margin was enough for their hosts to squeeze home 64-63, despite a 23-12 win for the trio of Martine Howe, Peter Howland and Martin Payne. This was followed by a 70-42 reverse at Featherstone, losing all triples. Winning ways return, though, thanks to a 55-47 victory at Springfield (Acton), with the rink of Dave Godfrey, Ron Green, Pam Hughes and Rene Barber leading the way with a 23-14 win.
