West Ealing's women travelled to Ashford in their first "neutral green" of the season. That was the venue for the quarter- and semi-finals of the Middlesex Women's Fours. The quartet of Janine Bancroft, Kaz Ryan, Megan Hunt and Sue Butcher faced a last-8 tie against Rosedale Park. After a tight tussle, they emerged as 14-11 victors, to set up a tough match against Cambridge Park. Sadly, it was a game too far and Cambridge Park won 23-11.
In the Men's Middlesex Double Fours, our 'A' Team, who had received a bye through the early round faced a match against Brondesbury. Despite our team turning up at both venues, Brondesbury were blissfully unaware of the impending tie, resulting in a walkover for West Ealing. A tough battle with Bounds Green is the prize.
Sunday (June 5th) saw the first of a trio of men's Double Fours matches. This one was a London & Southern Counties Shield match against Ashford. With Ashford's green busy with the aforemntioned women's fours quarters and semis, both rinks were played at Mervyn Road, which was still just about accessible despite a street party. A very close game was witnessed by those who made it past the Jubilee Jelly, with both West Ealing rinks winning, one by 2 and the other by 1! Another tough match, against North Sheen is the result.
The previous day, West Ealing took on Ealing Central in the annual John Saville Trophy fixture. West Ealing came out victorious 75-35. "Paul's Pens" went to the rink of Rob Ryan, John Townley, Lionel Singleton and Kevin Simms-Cato, who romped home 30-11.
In other competitions, Paul Wilsher's quartet progressed in the BE Mixed Fours at the expense of Brentham's Phil Sutcliffe, setting up an all-West Ealing tussle against Sue Butcher's side next round.
In the B.E. Mixed Pairs, Phil Sutcliffe was also the recipient of a defeat handed to them by Paul Cater and his partner Dawn Slaughter of Cambridge Park.
In the L&SC Mixed Pairs, Robin Innes and Megan Hunt came through a tie against Ashford's Rob Hackwell 21-17
