Weekly Round-Up
Monday 27th June 2022

It was case of "a bad day at the office" for West Ealing this week. Hopes of progress in two Bowls England competitions were dashed as we fell to defeat in both the Top Club and Double Fours.

First up was the Top Club, and a repeat of last year's competition with a visit to Ladygate. Hoping for a different outcome, West Ealing started strongly and were ahead in three matches. John Carey eventually won his singles, which counteracted defeat in the Two Wood for Paul Wilsher.
Sadly, the pairs was lost and a strong comeback in both the Triples and Fours resulted in Ladygate wins - especially in the latter where the fightback resulted in an extra end win for the Ruislip-based side.

The following night, we reconvened with Ashford, this time at home in the Bowls England Double Fours. Sadly it was a case of "different venue, same outcome" as an Ashford win on one rink was sufficient to see them through 33-25.

It was a busy week for the pairing of Megan Hunt and Sue Butcher in the Middlesex Women's Pairs. In their delayed last-16 tie away at Rosedale, they overcame their hosts, thanks to an extra end. This gave them a quarter-final tie against Paddington, held at Cambridge Park BC. A 16-10 win earned them a semi-final tie against North London later in the day. Sadly they couldn't repeat their feats of earlier and went down 7-17.

Saturday saw the Middlesex Men's Two Wood Day. West Ealing's entrants made the trip to their area venue at Hayes BC. After a tiring day of four matches, the Area Final (Last-8) was contested by two West Ealing players. Paul Cater beat Rob Green to qualify for the Semi Final, which will take place on County Finals day at the end of July.

In the Women's Singles, Sue Butcher gained an away win at Hurlingham to take her to the Quarter Finals which will be hosted by West Ealing in mid-July.

Making similar progress were Men's triples entries of Paul Cater and Rob Green, the latter winning a repeat of last year's successful final, beating Rosedale. Both trios face quarter final ties to be held at Masonians on July 23rd.

In the Middlesex Men's Pairs, there was mixed fortunes for our teams. The all West Ealing tie pitted Jay Head and Paul Cater against Chris Ryan and Paul Wilsher. Jay and Paul squeezing a win with Paul C’s last bowl. Robin Innes and Bob Wilsher also just squeezed through, thanks to an extra end victory over Brentham. Sadly Craig Hill and Barry Wheeler lost out at Ealing Central.

In the Bowls England Mixed Fours, there was another all-West Ealing tie. This resulted in an 18-14 win for the quartet of Megan Hunt, Sue Butcher, Craig Hill and Barry Wheeler, who overcame Janine Bancroft, Kaz Ryan, Paul Wilsher and John Carey. They now travel to Ashford to play former West Ealing players Kerry and Martin Payne.

In the L&SC Mixed Pairs, Megan Hunt together with returnee Bob Tiller (subbing for Robin Innes) beat an Egham pair.

Sunday's final group match in the Middlesex League saw West Ealing gain the necessary points to confirm qualification for the semi-finals in September. Needing victory on at least one rink in the match against Brentham to ensure their place, West Ealing won two rinks and an overall victory for an 8-2 points win and 80-51 on shots. The result was never in doubt with the rink of Rob Green, Neil Bleakley, Mitch Williams and Trevor Grover leading all the way and eventually finishing with a huge 38-3 victory. This meant West Ealing head to the semi-finals having gained 28 points from a possible 30.
